Workshop Goal and
scope
The
Universal Remote Console (URC) framework is a standards-based technology
(ISO/IEC 24752) for an open user interface platform for the next generation of
Ambient Intelligence and service and device environments in general. It allows
for pluggable, personalized user interfaces that are adaptable to the individual
needs and preferences of any person, using any modality for input and output. In
Europe, the EU-funded project i2home has been spear-heading implementation and
development of the URC technology in digital homes, building on its potentials
for task-based user interfaces.
Workshop
objectives:
·
to bring together individuals
and organizations with an interest in research and development of the URC
technology in Ambient Intelligence scenarios, and to facilitate collaborations
of mutual benefit;
·
to establish a common
understanding of the needs and
requirements of pluggable user interface applications in the context of
Ambient Intelligence from various perspectives of users, developers and other
stakeholders; and
·
to contribute to an R&D
agenda for future work on pluggable user interfaces, with the URC technology
as backbone for flexible user interfaces in future Ambient Intelligence and
other service environments.
Expected
Outcome
·
Network of research and development groups in the area of pluggable
user interfaces
·
Roadmap for future research, development and standardization work on
pluggable user interfaces
·
In case of very high quality of contributions we will consider a
special issue of a relevant journal or book
Submission
Participants are expected to hold either a
social or medical research background or to work on technological development
linked to AmI.
They are requested to submit a 300-word
abstract on a project they are involved in or about the following
topics:
·
Pluggable user interfaces
·
Architectural concepts and issues
·
User needs and preferences
·
Natural user interfaces and advanced interaction
techniques
·
Adaptive user interfaces and user profiles
·
Empirical studies and evaluations
·
User trust
·
Activity management
·
Task models and task-based user interfaces
·
Security and privacy issues
·
Demonstrations of prototypical systems and
products
·
Experiences regarding implementation and
standardization
·
Business models and opportunities
Submissions to the workshop will be
reviewed by the workshop organizers and accepted based on their quality and fit
for scope of work. Selected
position papers will be published in the conference adjunct
proceedings.Those participants
willing to develop a demonstration during the workshop must inform the
Organizers when submitting their paper.
Each speaker/contribution will be
given ample time for discussion, more than is customary at a conference. We encourage contributions of a critical
or comparative nature that provide fuel for discussion. We also invite people to share their
experiences of implementing and coordinating different aspects of platforms and
user interfaces in ambient intelligence scenarios. Short demonstrations are
encouraged.
The workshop will encourage the
participation of both system builders and theoretically oriented researchers,
thus creating a forum for discussion across vocational and disciplinary borders.
While taking practical applications and implemented dialogue systems as our
point of departure, we emphasize the potential contributions of theoretical and
empirical research: applications are the best testbeds for evaluating the
usefulness and originality of theories and ideas. There is a certain lack of
communication between theorists and system builders, and the workshop aims at
creating an atmosphere that allows for a productive interaction between these
two groups.
